Principles of AC and DC Quantities

Before discussing AC and DC, we must understand what electric current is. Electric Current: This is the flow of electric charge (electrons) through a conductor (like a wire). It is measured in Amperes (A). In the world of electronics, including GSM (mobile phones), we deal with two main types of current:

1.Alternating Current (AC)

2.Direct Current (DC).

Principles of Direct Current (DC) Quantities

Direct Current (DC) is the one-way, continuous flow of electric charge. In a DC circuit, electrons flow steadily in a single direction from the negative terminal to the positive terminal of the power source.

1. Constant Magnitude and Direction: The voltage and current remain constant over time. If you look at a graph of DC voltage over time, it is a straight, flat horizontal line.

2. Polarity Matters: DC sources have distinct positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. If you connect them backward (reverse polarity), the device (like a phone) will not work and might get damaged.

3. Sources of DC: a) Batteries (including mobile phone batteries – Lithium-ion). b) Solar panels. c) Power banks. d) Dynamo generators (used in older bicycles).

Relevance to GSM Maintenance: Mobile phones operate entirely on DC power. The sensitive electronic components (IC chips, processor, screen) require steady, continuous voltage to function correctly.

Principles of Alternating Current (AC) Quantities

Alternating Current (AC) is an electric current that periodically reverses its direction and changes its magnitude continuously with time. The electrons flow forwards, then backward, repeatedly. The voltage starts at zero, rises to a peak, falls back to zero, goes to a negative peak, and returns to zero. This creates a wave-like pattern (usually a sine wave) on a graph.

1. Frequency: Because it changes direction, AC has a “frequency.” This is the number of times it completes a full cycle (forward and backward) in one second. It is measured in Hertz (Hz). (e.g., Household electricity is usually 50Hz or 60Hz depending on the country).

2. No Fixed Polarity: The terminals are constantly switching between positive and negative, so there is no fixed (+) or (-) like a battery. We usually refer to the wires as “Live” and “Neutral.”

3. Sources of AC:

a) Mains electricity (Power holding company/national grid).

b) Alternators (large generators used in power stations or big standby generators). Relevance to GSM Maintenance: While phones use DC, the power coming from our wall sockets to charge them is AC. Therefore, phone chargers (adapters) act as rectifiers, converting the AC power from the wall socket into the steady DC power the phone battery needs.
